‘Every minor detail – execute them’: Guruzeta’s path from rehabilitation to scoring with Athletic
The debut appearance the Athletic striker competed in English soil, an teenage playing for the youth squad against German opponents at Wycombe’s stadium in fall 2015, he hit the target. On his next visit he played in the country, against the English side following that, he scored. The third time, against Manchester City soon after, indeed, he scored again. Upon his comeback to the northwest to take on Manchester United at the sports complex in that year, he scored again. It was a superb volley, too. “Truly,” he states, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve ever scored.” Therefore the team did what they had to do: he was replaced.
“I became very upset,” the attacker says, then chuckling. “Probably there’s a recording. Our match against United and I was in fine form. They kept me out of the final 45 minutes: I hadn’t yet signed deal, goals were flowing, there were lots of rumours, you know how it is. No confirmation on interest from Newcastle, but I recall seeing about Manchester United, the typical thing. It’s unclear how true it was, but supposing an offer came, I would have wanted to stay at Athletic. I’m fortunate to be here.”
Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other
At Lezama, the city, the early training is ready to commence; following that, the brief trip to Loiu and another flight to England, this time to face Newcastle in the Champions League on the upcoming match. Uttering the name brings a smile to his face. It’s turning out to be a tough year for Athletic, partially owing to the pressures of competing at this level. Beaten in added time in the weekend clash, they have managed just one win of their recent league fixtures and been defeated by Arsenal and the German side in Europe. However, consider the broader view, the memorable evenings and future challenges, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation from him.
In the the period since he had come back to Athletic, the striker has been a Europa League semi-finalist, denied at the last hurdle a final at home by the English giants, and has boarded a decades-old barge up the Nervión estuary accompanied by a huge crowd after securing the Spanish cup, the team’s initial silverware in 40 years. He’s now the top goal-getter in the Champions League, where they are unique and debuting in ten years. “This was beyond my dreams,” he states.
The player believed it difficult enough just to make the first team and his assessment was correct. The son of the former Real Sociedad player Xabi Guruzeta and a dedicated fan at the team he now opposes, the forward is a product of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that produced Mikel Arteta, the former star and Andoni Iraola. He joined Athletic at his teens but after his first-team bow in that summer, he experienced a torn cruciate, being released, a drop in category and a return before he could earn his place, making his comeback to enjoy the highlights of his career.
“Entering the youth system doubting you’ll make the senior squad but every phase you advance through you’re persisting and you can notice the proximity. You get there but … you’re sent away.” He had limited game time in a handful of matches between his bow and early 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games at that level and I suffered the ACL injury.
“A severe disappointment but In retrospect as a turning point because it shifted the perspective. Recovering from a long-term injury is challenging, but it aids growth. You cultivate routines previously lacking. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I would go to training and then go home, typical youth behavior. At the complex, facilities are comprehensive, so utilize it all. Practice, prevention. Get in the gym. If your hips aren’t balanced, address that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, enhance it further. All those ‘silly things’: do them.
“In the first team you’re going to crash into players who have crashed into players repeatedly. Highly robust. I look at photos of me before: my legs are chicken legs. Thus incidents occur. Look at pictures of me now and the improvement is clear. The setback taught me. Sessions end, but further effort is needed. Peers are prepared, really ready; you have to be too.”
You also have to play. Guruzeta departed in tears in the pandemic season, aged 23, dropping into the second division. With Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he netted three goals in numerous matches. With Amorebieta in the latter part of the season, the scoring picked up. “It’s a common path: transfers, releases. With a turnaround, work, believe, and when eventually they need someone in your position, they might come back for you. You have to be ready. When the opportunity came, an aspiration fulfilled. Lifting the cup, play in Europe, and make the UCL … pfff.”
No wonder he says this is to be enjoyed. Particularly after the prior campaign which, on occasions, was about endurance. Previously the main threat with sixteen goals, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
